Tamerlan Tsarnaev wife: Bombing suspect's spouse speaks out, condemns attack

Tamerlan Tsarnaev wife: Bombing suspect's spouse speaks out, condemns attack, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bombing suspect killed Friday morning in a shootout with police, was married to 24-year-old American Katherine Russell. The couple have a three-year-old daughter together.

According to the Huffington Post, which carried the April 21 story of the Tsarnaevs, the Russell family, on behalf of Tamerlan’s spouse, released a brief statement expressing remorse.

Their words, while conveying shock, carefully disassociate the family from any involvement with the tragic incidents of April 15.

"Our daughter has lost her husband today, the father of her child. We cannot begin to comprehend how this horrible tragedy occurred. In the aftermath of the Patriot's Day horror, we know that we never really knew Tamerlan Tsarnaev."

“Our hearts are sickened by the knowledge of the horror he has inflicted," the statement continued. They asked to be left alone "in this difficult time."

The couple’s three-year-old daughter, Zahara, remains in the care of her mother and family.

According to the family, Tamerlan spent every weekend with Katherine's family at their suburban Rhode Island home.

Tamerlan’s aunt, Maret Tsarnaeva, who spoke at length to the media on Friday from Toronto, expressed doubt and shock that her nephews could be capable of such a heinous act of terror.

"I'm suspicious that this was staged," she said. Commenting on Tameran’s family life, she said, “He has a wife in Boston and from a Christian family, so you can't tie it to religion. He found his love, he married, he had a daughter and he was very happy about his daughter.”

Katherine Russell and her family are expected to be formally questioned by police and the FBI in the coming weeks.
