Times Square was next: Marathon bombing suspects planned to bomb Times Square

Times Square was next: Marathon bombing suspects planned to bomb Times Square, Times Square was to have been the next target of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, New York officials said Thursday, according to The Associated Press on April 25.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the younger of the two brothers suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings, told interrogators from his hospital bed that he and his older brother had decided to bomb Times Square.

The Tsarnaev brothers had planned to use leftover explosives to blow up Times Square. Their explosives included a pressure-cooker bomb like that used in the Boston Marathon bombings as well as five pipe bombs.

The suspects’ plan to bomb Times Square only fell apart after Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his younger brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were intercepted by police in a stolen car, launching an intense gun battle.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev died at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center early last Friday morning after the shootout. It’s likely that he had also been run over and dragged by an SUV driven by his younger brother, fellow bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

It was recently learned that the bombing suspects were on welfare. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, his wife, Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, and their 3-year-old daughter, were receiving taxpayer-funded state welfare benefits in Massachusetts even as the bombing suspect’s anti-American hatred grew.
