Boston Marathon victim: Heather Abbott in good spirits after amputation, The bombings that took place during the 117th running of the Boston Marathon left Bostonians and the nation stunned. The double blasts left three people dead, and more that 170 other injured. Sadly, a number of those injured had to have portions of their leg/s amputated in the hours and days following the attacks. According to an April 25 article published by Boston.com, 38-year-old Heather Abbott was one such victim.
Abbott is said to be in great spirits, despite having to make the difficult choice to have her left leg amputated below the knee.
According to the report, Dr. Eric Bluman told Abbott that even after having surgery to repair her injured leg that she could still be left with chronic pain. So, Abbott made the choice to go ahead with the amputation.
Abbott was quoted with saying;
"It certainly was a difficult decision, but when I weighed the pros and cons I think this [the amputation] was the best decision for me."
She later told reporters that she wasn't angry about what happened, though she can't be sure she won't feel that way in the future.
Friends of Heather Abbott have set up a charity fund to help cover the cost of her medical treatment. If you would like to help Heather, you can find her fund at Gofundme.com/HeatherAbbott.
