The blaze broke out before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 4700 block of Vista Street. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the 2-story row house. It took them about 30 minutes to put the blaze under control. Two firefighters were taken to Aria Health/Torresdale to be treated for heat exhaustion. Both were expected to be okay. Fire officials say three homes were damaged. Nine people have been displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. Investigators are working to determine what sparked the blaze.     Tweet MCDFRS FF HOSPITALIZED AFTER APT FIRE Tuesday, October 14, 2014  An overnight two-alarm fire in a Derwood apartment building has hospitalized a firefighter and two residents, one of whom suffered life-threatening injuries. According to Pete Piringer, spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, firefighters responded to a building fire at the Mallard Cove apartments in the 8100 block of Needwood Road around 1:00 Tuesday morning. Once on scene crews found fire showing from a terrace level apartment of the three-story structure and received reports of people trapped inside. A second alarm response was requested as firefighters were able to rescue one of the residents.     Tweet 2 CHICAGO FFs HOSPITALIZED AFTER MAYDAYS CBS Chicago Video Monday, October 13, 2014  A tricky fire burning in Bridgeport trapped several Chicago firefighters and two of them ended up in the hospital Sunday afternoon. CBS 2’s Vince Gerasole reports those firefighters are being observed after being trapped in two separate areas while barreling this blaze. Though fortunately there are no significant injuries to report crews say this was a nasty blaze to battle. Crews described the fire as stubborn and unpredictable. The Bridgeport house fire started in a three flat and spread to two neighboring homes. Antioch Police were called where they took the subject into custody and placed him in an American Medical Response Unit where he will be taken for a blood test. It appears no firefighters were injured in the exchange. According to witnesses, the man was driving along E. 18th without headlights swerving in and out of lanes while even hopping the curb. The vehicle was out of Oakley according to radio traffic. No further details were provided on scene.     Tweet CLOSE CALL IN HOUSTON LEADS TO MELTED HELMET Click2Houston Video Friday, October 10, 2014  Houston firefighters battled a house fire on Garden St. near Fir Street in southeast Houston on Friday. No one was hurt, but there was a close call for one firefighter who briefly became trapped inside the front door.  Other fire fighters quickly pulled him to safety and no one was not injured. The firefighters was badly burned and  his helmet melted from the intense heat. No one was home at the time the fire started. The homeowner, Alejandra Oliva, and her husband were both at work. Their two kids were in school. “My husband called me and said: ‘The house is on fire,’” she said to Local 2. The home is complete loss. Neighbors saw the flames just before noon and called 911. Investigators said something about this fire seemed unusual. They discovered a broken window in the back of the house and some blood on the ground nearby, like maybe someone had been trying to break in. more ]     Tweet IL PUMP OPERATOR SUFFERS CARDIAC ARREST AT HOUSE FIRE Friday, October 10, 2014  A firefighter from Unit #7 Fire Protection District Station 2, Benld, remains hospitalized at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, according to a press release issued by Chief Larry Norville. No one else was reported injured in the blaze, which was first reported on Sunday, October 5, at 11:08 p.m. in the 200 block of West Walnut in Benld. The residence sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. Fire crews from Benld arrived on scene first and immediately dispatched Gillespie for additional equipment and manpower. [ more ]     Tweet New Group Calling For New Investigation Into Dallas Firefighter’s Death Thursday, October 9, 2014   The Dallas Fire Fighters’ Association is calling for a new investigation, because they believe at least one, or maybe several, Dallas firefighters may not be telling the truth about what happened on the morning Stan Wilson died.The veteran firefighter died when he and three others entered an apartment complex that collapsed in May 2013. [ more ]     Tweet UPDATE: HARTFORD FF KEVIN BELL LODD FoxCT.com Video Thursday, October 9, 2014  The Hartford firefighter who died in Tuesday night’s fire has been identified as Kevin Bell. The flag at the Blue Hills Fire Department in Hartford is flying at half staff to honor him, while down the block crews and the State Fire Marshall are investigating what caused the fire that killed the 48-year-old. Mayor Pedro Segarra said Bell’s firefighter brothers who were injured included Jason Martinez, who was critically injured with burns over 10 percent of his body, and Colin McWeeny and Kevin Burke, who were treated for minor injures and released. Martinez, 29, was taken to Bridgeport Hospital’s burn unit where he is in critical but stable condition. McWeeny, 34, and Burke, 51 were treated and released after receiving minor injuries. [ more ]     Tweet CSB Recommends Safety Improvements to U.S. Department of Transportation Emergency Response Guidebook Widely Used by Firefighters Thursday, October 9, 2014  The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) is recommending critical safety improvements to the widely-used Emergency Response Guidebook published by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for emergency responders to use when confronting chemical fires, explosions and releases of hazardous materials.  The CSB noted that while the manual is provided for responders to use in transportation incidents, CSB investigators have found over the years that the guidebook is often used by emergency responders – firefighters, medical technicians and police officers -- dealing with chemical accidents at fixed facilities.  However, the CSB found some of the directions given in the manual are vague.  The CSB document specifically cited guidebook changes needed for handling ammonium nitrate fires such as the one that led to a massive explosion at a fertilizer storage facility in W...
