Senator comes out: Nevada lawmaker reveals during gay marriage debate, It was reported on April 23, 2013, that a Nevada state senator came out during a gay marriage debate on Monday night in Carson City, NV. Sen. Kelvin Atkinson, D-North Las Vegas, declared publicly that he was gay during a heated debate.

"'I’m black. I’m gay. I know this is the first time many of you have heard me say that I am a black, gay male.'" The debate was before a vote on State Joint Resolution 13 to reverse the ban on gay marriage and require Nevada to recognize all marriages regardless of gender...reported

The debate went on for about an hour and was very emotional leading up to the state senator's revelation.

Ultimately the Nevada Senate voted 12-9 in favor of beginning the process to repeal the gay marriage ban from the state constitution according to the Las Vegas Sun.

If SJR13 passes, the legislature will have to approve it again in 2015. The measure could then be put on a ballot in 2016 to be voted on by the people of Nevada.
