6 LONG BEACH CA FFs INJURED AT SEPERATE FIRES - 1 SERIOUSLY BURNED

Sunday, October 19, 2014  Six Long Beach firefighters were injured -- two of them requiring hospitalization -- as they battled two separate fires Saturday.

The first took place around 3:30 a.m. and caused extensive damage to the Long Beach Maytag Home Appliance Center at 967 E. Fourth St. as well as the adjacent Bond’s building, said Jake Heflin, spokesman for the fire department.

While fighting the blaze one firefighter received minor burns and was treated and released at the scene. Later that day, two other firefighters reported blistering on their ears related to the fire. They sought treatment.

No other person was hurt in the fire but one dog was killed and a second injured. Long Beach Animal Care and Control was called for the second dog. Both animals were inside the Maytag building, but Heflin said they did not belong to the owner of the business.

The second fire erupted around 1:45 p.m. when several motorists driving along th... [ more ]

FIRE APPARATUS RECALL AFTER MONTANA LODD

Sunday, October 19, 2014

The recall of the double Cardan front drive shaft comes from Navistar which manufactures the International 4800 apparatus involved in the crash in June.

The recall was issued after the Montana Highway Patrol released their accident report. The recall is slightly different from previous recalls in that this one requires the part to be removed and replaced.

Navistar's communications director, Steve Schrier tells media that Navistar has not received their report, but issued the recall after conducting their own investigation. He says an investigation is often launched after consumer concerns about a possible defect. During their investigations they look at things such as warranty claims and gather data from field reports. If a defect is found, Navistar then issues a recall and notifies their custom... [ more ]
