Al Michaels DUI charge: NBC sports announcer illegal U-Turn results in arrest, NBC Sports announcer Al Michaels was pulled over by Santa Monica police after making an illegal U-turn at a DUI checkpoint.

Michaels was taken to the police station and registered a blood-alcohol level over the .08 percent legal limit, ESPN reported on April 21. Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis confirmed that the “Sunday Night Football” play-by-play man was booked on suspicion of DUI and held for approximately six to eight hours on Friday night. Sgt. Lewis declined to specify Al Michael’s exact blood alcohol level

The Santa Monica police were conducting a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, April 19 when officers witnessed Michaels make an illegal U-Turn at approximately 9:30 p.m. in order to avoid the checkpoint.

In a statement NBC Sports advised that the network is aware of the situation but has no further comment. Al Michaels worked for ABC Sports for 30 years before moving to NBC in 2006. Michaels was the play-by-play voice for ABC’s “Monday Night Football” and made his “believe-in-miracles” call at the 1980 Winter Olympics after the United States hockey victory over the heavily favored Soviet Union.
