Martin City .1K Challenge is coming up April 28

Martin City .1K Challenge is coming up April 28, Kansas City’s weather still isn’t always feeling like spring, but the warm weather events are still popping up on the calendar. Coming up on Sunday, April 28, is the event being hailed as ‘the biggest race in Martin City history’ – the Martin City .1K Challenge.

Yes, you read that right. The Martin City .1K Challenge is coming back in 2013 for its second year. The 328.08333333 feet race is the brain-child of locals John and Suzie Warren, and benefits the Mid America Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Warrens have been active with Team in Training (TNT) for several years, putting in hundreds of miles – or more likely, thousands – cycling for their cause. A long-time cyclist, it’s been almost five years since John saw a TNT pamphlet and signed up for his first Century Ride. In 2012, Suzie made the figurative leap off the sidelines and onto a bike of her own to join John on the hundred mile ride.

Over the years, the Warrens have held fundraisers of all varities to meet their TNT goals. Realizing that not everyone is cut out for tackling hundred mile bike rides or running marathons, they decided a slightly less grueling athletic event was in order, and the .1K Challenge was born. It may be a less grueling event, but it’s an event with no lack of personality, which is evident from even a quick look at their Facebook page.

Costumes aren’t required but glance through last year's pictures and you'll see racers with walkers, men running in high heels, a cheerleader with pom-poms and a tiara, and other costumes of all varieties on runners of all ages. Earlier this week, John noted that competition is expected to be extremely tough in the High-Heeled Coed Relay Division as well as the Best Superhero Impersonator Division. Last year’s ‘medical staff,’ Brookelyn’s Bombshells, will be back again with Lamar’s Donuts at the mid-way point.

The race kicks off at noon on Sunday, April 28, and is being held in the general area of the Martin Center Brewing Company (500 E. 135 St., Kansas City, MO). All donations are tax-deductible. Although donations of any size are cheerfully accepted, to participate in Sunday’s race, a donation $30 is required. All finishers will receive a medal and a hot dog buffet, with a finish line beer for runners over age 21, and official race t-shirts will be available for $10 while supplies last.

Donations can be made on the Team Survivor website at Team in Training.
