Nicolas Sarkozy Four Children Three Wives, With tempers fraying ahead of a final vote on Socialist president François Hollande's "marriage for all" law next Tuesday, Philippe Cochet, an MP from former president Nicolas Sarkozy's Right-wing UMP party, sparked uproar with his inflammatory claim.
As well as legalising gay marriage and adoption, the law will replace the words "mother" and "father" from civil documents with "parents"..REPORTED.
"What you are doing is driving a wedge (into French society) that will not close if this text is passed. It's a disgrace. You are in the process of murdering children," he told dumbstruck MPs in the National Assembly.
In the ensuing furore, the Socialist parliamentary speaker, Claude Bartolone, suspended the session for five minutes to restore order.
Mr Cochet later admitted the term was "not appropriate" but added: "The harm is the same – it's about weakening children." The MP's outburst was in response to Socialist justice minister, Michel Taubira's, claim that the opposition Right was fanning the flames of dangerous social unrest in France and fomenting a "climate that resembles a spaghetti western of the 1970s".Government spokeswoman Najat Vallaud-Belkacem said Mr Cochet's remarks were "unacceptable".
"The opposition has crossed all the limits," she said. Earlier, Mr Hollande warned increasingly radical opponents of the gay marriage bill against any acts of "homophobic and violent acts" hours after a gay bar in Lille, northern France was ransacked and three people injured. Four people were under arrest on Thursday night.
"I ask people to respect parliament, the law, and universal suffrage," he said referring to the fact that the gay marriage law was an electoral promise.
Opponents have multiplied protests across France in recent days with the main protest group increasingly unable to control violent hard-Right elements.
A peaceful demonstration on 2,500 people before parliament ended in scuffles and tear gas on Wednesday night while some pro-gay marriage MPs have been intimidated and in two cases received death threats.
Interior Minister Manuel Valls convened police chiefs on Thursday amid fears a mass demonstration on Sunday could turn violent.
In a sign that the main "Demos for All" protest group is no longer in control of the widening anti-gay marriage movement, its leader Frigide Barjot called on Mr Valls to launch "preventive measures" to clamp down on "hard-Right and nationalist factions" ahead of Sunday's protest.
Mr Valls said: "I call on everyone to show some responsibility."
