16 tornadoes tallied so far this year in Mississippi, The number of tornadoes confirmed to have struck parts of Mississippi so far this year has risen to 16.

The National Weather Service reported Monday (April 22) that three tornadoes were confirmed from severe storms last Thursday in the Mississippi Delta region.

The tornadoes were described as brief and weak with only minor damage found in Issaquena and Sharkey counties.

In Issaquena County, an EF-1 tornado with 90 mph winds touched down three miles north northwest of the town of Mayersville, just after 5 p.m. Thursday. The tornado left a 50-yard-wide, two mile long damage path with a large tree uprooted and a large farm pivot overturned.

Two more tornadoes, rated as EF-0s with 75 mph winds, were confirmed in Sharkey County.

Both touched down just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday. One of the tornadoes were captured on video as it crossed Highway 61 in the Nitta Yuma area with no damage reported. The other snapped a large tree and caused minor shingle damage to a home.

These tornadoes marked the 14th, 15th and 16th confirmed in the state so far. This is the lowest output of tornadoes in Mississippi in several years up to this point in the season.

While it has not been a very active year so far, half of the confirmed tornadoes have been strong and one has proven deadly.

According to the NWS, eight out of the 16 tornadoes have hit parts of the state with a rating of EF-2 to EF-4 intensity with winds of 111 to 170 mph.
