Boston weather forecast for Apr. 23, 2013

Boston weather forecast for Apr. 23, 2013, Forecast discussion: High pressure gave us one more nice day in eastern Massachusetts, as it slowly moves over Nova Scotia. Some mid-level clouds began to take over our skies this afternoon, and we are beginning to see more clouds than stars outside the weather center. The clouds are due to a low pressure system off the east coast. This low will be hanging around Southern New England for the next few days.

The low will move northward this evening, and we will begin to see drizzle and an isolated shower or two by Tuesday morning. As we move into Tuesday evening, the low will work its way off of Cape Cod, and will become stationary. There will be a lot of precipitation with this low, and the system will become blocked. The high over Nova Scotia will remain in place, so the low will not be able to move eastward. Instead, it will slowly move northward into the Gulf of Maine. The Cape and Islands will see the most precipitation, with 2 inches of rainfall possible. Inland Rhode Island may see about an inch before the low moves north Wednesday afternoon.

We will continue to have some scattered showers come off the water Wednesday evening, before drier air begins to move in Thursday morning. High pressure coming in from the Great Lakes will bring some sunshine Thursday afternoon. At this time, it appears the high will block any other low pressure systems for the first half of the weekend.

However, the long range computer models disagree on how long the high can block all the precipitation. The American and European models agree the high may be able to hold off some shower activity until Sunday, since the high begins to weaken. However, the United Kingdom model keeps the high strong enough to keep any precipitation away until late Monday night. For now, I will keep showers in the forecast, starting Sunday afternoon, before they dissipate off the coastline early Monday morning.
